Snapping the Big Apple
Friday, February 24, 2006I need your help! In 10 short days I’ll be jetting to New York with Dan, where we’ll be generously accommodated by the lovely Bart. It’s a tremendously exciting prospect – it’s the first time I’ll’ve been on a proper, out of the country, out of the loop holiday in nearly three years.
Unfortunately things have been so manic of late that planning things to do hasn’t really gone beyond the ideas stage – we definitely want to take in MoMA and numerous other galleries and museums, and obviously all the basic tourist must-sees. But what else? Do you know of any hidden gems that we can’t miss?
Also, I’m thinking about getting a new camera. My Canon Powershot A40 has served me well over the years, but I’m looking for something a bit more beefy. I’m undecided as to whether I want another point-and-shoot-but-with-funky-features – such as the Canon Powershot S80, or whether I should foray into getting an entry-level digital SLR? Decisions, decisions. Ideally I’d love to spend more time doing photography – and perhaps do a course so that I actually know what I’m doing! Advice on this matter is greatly appreciated, too.
Also, if anyone has any get-rich-quick schemes to recommend, please pipe up – I’m going to be broke after this little lot…

Nikon D50. It’s the perfect camera between happy digital person and serious professional digital camera person. Don’t get the silver one though, they look naff.

I’ve got a Canon S60 and it’s a really fun camera – lots of manual features but still just about pocketable. I am thinking of getting myself a Nikon D50 soon though – they’re under 500 quid now…

You can queue in Time Square for cheap theatre tickets to the Broadway shows. Try a kosher deli – I recommend salt beef on rye, and be sure to go to the Metropolitan Museum, especially if you want to see a lot of old Pollocks!

Not sure where you sit in the love/hate peanut butter camp, but there’s a peanut butter company in Greenwich Village that serves up the best peanut butter/nutella/marshmallow combinations! Or a peanut butter BLT if that’s more your thing. [www.ilovepeanutbutter.com]

Go and see The Earth Room at 141 Wooster St – it’s an upstairs room full of soil, but it somehow works. Also just round the corner at 393 West Broadway is Broken Kilometer, a kilometer long pice of brass rodding cut up and laid out on the floor. They are free, just ring the bell. They are both owned by the Dia Centre For The Arts

The Rose Hayden Planetarium is the best place on Earth.
