LASEK diary: two weeks in

This is the ninth in a series of posts describing my personal experience of having laser eye surgery in February 2012. To start at the beginning, go back to theĀ first post in the series.

Two full weeks in after surgery and things have improved a tiny bit this week, but I’m still getting headaches using a computer for long periods of time (which my job requires, unfortunately) and going back to my usual routine of cycling to work, doing a couple of runs per week and working full days doesn’t seem to have done me any favours.

I’m keeping going with the dexamethasone drops every other hour, and refresh at least once an hour. I suspect that the dexamethasone is making my skin more sensitive and scratchy than normal, which is odd, but these things happen.

Both eyes are still a bit blurry, and though eye drops bring some comfort and clarity it’s pretty short lived. If my eyes stay at this level I’ll be disappointed in the outcome.

I know I need to be patient and that this might take up to three months to be back to similar pre-op vision.

  1. Hi there, I also had LASEK – on Feb 15th, so it’s about three and a half weeks ago. It’s interesting and reassuring to read that you’re having a similar experience to me. Would be good to know how the past week has gone for you? I seem to have crystal clear vision in my right eye (since very soon after the procedure) but a very blurry left eye, which makes me worry, but the optician has told me it’s completely normal for the eyes to heal at different rates. I went out for a ride on my road bike yesterday, for the first time since surgery, and could barely focus on anything while I was out riding and when I got home. Wondered if it was the effect of the wind rushing by, causing my eyes to dry out. It sorted itself out after an hour back at home and some lubricating drops.

Anyway I keep waking up hoping to see clearly out of both eyes but gradually realise during the day that I’m not quite there yet. Apparently it can take up to 3 months but I certainly hope my eyes stabilise before then! Good luck with your recovery.

  2. Hi Camilla

I had a really similar experience to you (just wrote up my post about being 3-weeks in from surgery) – my right eye suddenly became very clear but my left eye was still quite ghosty. Cycling was bad for me too, even after a short ride my eyes dried out and it became very blurry.

It’s just time I think – I’m now 5-weeks post surgery and I’m starting to forget that I had it done which is a good sign! Have patience!

  3. Hello there, here is Nicky. Finally I found a great source to read and compare post LASEK eye surgery changes. On June 22th, 2020, I had LASEK surgery of both eyes. If I`m not wrong I had myopia with -7 and -6 on my left and right eye, respectively. In addition, astigmatism with some values. So now, day 15 and I see 20/30 clearly from distance 2,5-3 meters, but with small double vision. Today after 2 weeks I returned to work. When I switched on laptop and looked on it I have some blurry and double vision and I would like to ask from all who had eye surgery, is it normal to have it still? Is it not like remaining astigmatism? Great thanks for any feedback .
