LASEK diary: three and a bit months in

This is the twelfth in a series of posts describing my personal experience of having laser eye surgery in February 2012. To start at the beginning, go back to the first post in the series.

It’s now three months post surgery and I was rather hoping that the last 10% of my eyesight would come into crisp focus, but it’s still not quite as good as it was before with glasses. I had my three-month follow up this week and my left eye is now +1.25 and my right eye is +1.00 (I was previously -7 in both). It means my distance vision is OK but my close-up vision is still a little bit poor (especially in my left eye).

I’ve been prescribed a cream and some drops which may well stimulate my eyes to completely heal, but it may take another six months or so according to the surgeon. For LASEK patients with severe myopia pre-op, it’s normal for the surgery to slightly overcorrect the problem as when the eyes settle the effect is to become more short sighted, apparently, so hopefully I’ll come back in to 0 or nearabouts in both eyes.

I’m not really having any problems apart from sometimes using my computer at night when my eyes are tired. Driving and normal day-to-day life is totally fine.

Will update again in a few months.

  1. Hi Simon,

Came across your blog on Lasek as I’m booked in to have it done with Mr Stevens at Moorfields.

Have to say I’m having second thoughts in quite a major way. The recovery seems to take ages and as a makeup artist I can’t really run the risk of not being able to see the person I’m applying makeup to, even if it is only for 2-3 weeks (although your blog and other forums have lead me to believe it’s a lot longer than that).

Can I ask how your sight is now, 6 months on?

I’d be grateful of any comments…

    All best wishes,
    Natalie James

  2. Hi Natalie

Six months on my eyes are pretty spot on. I have my next checkup in October but things have got steadily better since the above post and now I can barely notice the difference to how it was before with glasses.

That said it did take a while to heal and only now do I feel confident doing work which demands visual acuity eg photography and editing.

Be prepared and take a long holiday to rest afterwards – that’s my advice. I don’t regret the surgery at all!

  3. Hi Simon

Thanks for the great set of Lasek posts, I stumbled over them whilst deciding whether to go Lasek or not!

I’m now day 5 post treatment of my left eye and strangely my post surgery day 1 I had perfect vision in the treated eye – I could see better than with glasses but now its blurry and short distance vision is not existent!

I decided to have one eye done at a time and have my right eye booked in for 9 days time 🙂

Thanks again, your posts have been an inspiration and have got me started on writing my own (which I’m dictating into my iPhones voice recorder and will have to translate to text over the next week!)

    Cheers Andy
